Euro Weekly News now owns three of Southern Spain's free newspapers

Southern Spain boasts a great selection of free English language newspapers, but just lately the biggest – Euro Weekly News – has acquired two more titles. Round Town News and Sol Times now fall under the umbrella of the Euro Weekly News Media group.

Is that a good thing? It’s good in the sense of increased distribution for readers and more competitive rates for advertisers. However, is it such a good idea for one group to own so many titles? I’m not so sure, and it’s bound to cause job losses, and increased work loads for the journalists retained by the group. Freelance opportunities are likely to be reduced as well. But that’s my take from the point of view of a freelance writer. What do other people think?
