Traveling though Italy by train can be spectacular. Watching the scenery pass you by as you make it from one city to the next is the best way to travel. But train transportation in Italy is notorious for its strikes. The only great part about these strikes are that they are scheduled!

Make sure to check strike schedules on Commisione di Garanzia Sciopero

Scheduled strike on Friday Oct. 21

A train strike will be affecting all travelers on REGIONAL trains booked with Trenitalia. The strike is expected to start tomorrow, Friday Oct. 21 at 9am and last until about 5pm.

Here is more info on the strike this Friday Oct. 21, http://www.today.it/cronaca/sciopero-trasporti-…
It’s a general transportation strike so flights and buses may be affected.

One important thing to remember is that the actual personnel at train stations will NOT always be helpful, or even INFORMED!!! It’s best to keep up on the website, as you’ve suggested. Fortunately, the Freccie (fast trains) aren’t usually affected by these strikes, but if you’re not in a large city and have to reach one of them via a regional train you can come into quite a situation. There are guaranteed hours (set up for commuters) for the regional trains, between 6 and 9am and between 6 and 9pm on workdays). That does not mean, though, that your trains will be on time, since those days are a real mess! Here’s a link with more information, but in Italian http://www.trenitalia.com/tcom/Informazioni/Tre…
