As we begin Holy Week, we approach the most ancient liturgies of the Church in the Triduum of Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday morning. If you have not yet had a chance to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation, you still have opportunities to do so at St. Patrick’s Church, Monday through Wednesday, April 10-12, at 5.30 PM or Holy Thursday at San Camillo de Lellis from 4.30 until 5.15 PM. We prefer not to offer confession during the Triduum itself in order to fully enter into the preparation and celebration of these sacred liturgies.
The Triduum, which means Three Days, begins on Holy Thursday evening, April 13, with the Mass of the Lord’s Supper at 5.30 PM at San Camillo de Lellis. During this liturgy, representative parishioners are invited to come forward for the Washing of the Feet, reminding us of the act of service Jesus did for his disciples. The Holy Thursday liturgy does not end; the Eucharist is transferred in a procession to the Tabernacle at the Altar of Repose while we sing “Pange Lingua.” You are invited to remain in prayer for a few moments before you leave the Church in silence. I will be the presider and Fr. Steve will be the homilist for this liturgy.
On Good Friday, April 14, we celebrate the Liturgy of the Passion of the Lord at 7 PM also at San Camillo. This service, which is not a Mass, has three parts: the Liturgy of the Word which includes the reading of the Passion according to St. John, the Veneration of the Cross and Holy Communion. I am the presider.
On Holy Saturday, April 15, the Easter Vigil Mass at San Camillo begins at 7.30 PM with the Blessing of the Fire and the lighting of the new Paschal Candle; then we process through the darkened Church with the lit Paschal Candle. After the Exultet is sung, we hear the stories of our salvation in word and song. Following the Gospel and homily, we bless the Easter water, receive new members into the Church, renew our Baptismal Vows and are sprinkled with the newly blessed Easter water, and celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation (and later First Communion) for our newest members. After the Prayers of the Faithful, we move into the Liturgy of the Eucharist culminating in the reception of Holy Communion. I am the presider and homilst for this Mass, with Fr. Steve concelebrating and singing part of the Exultet.
On Easter Sunday, April 16, we have the Easter Sunday Mass at 9.00 AM in the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli. Fr. Russel Murray is the celebrant. Fr. Steve presides and preaches at the 10 AM Easter Sunday Mass in the Basilica of San Camillo de Lellis. We could really use help setting up and ushering at this Mass as it will be very crowded. There is no 11 AM Mass at Marymount on April 16, though there will be one on April 23. On Easter Monday, April 17, we will have a special Mass at 10 AM at San Camillo continuing our Easter celebration with joy and music.
Please don’t forget about our collection of food for those in need in our parish and bring these donations to either the Holy Thursday liturgy or one of the Easter Masses. Also please note that the collection on Holy Thursday will be for our Rice Bowl Project for Syrian refugees and the street children of Addis Ababa. We will continue accepting individual Rice Bowl donations between now and Pentecost. Please make US dollar checks out to the Paulist Fathers. Have a very blessed Holy Week and a Happy and Joyous Easter. Buona Pasqua. Ciao for now, Father Greg
